Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Financial Instability

The US central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline

Though the bureau was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the closure started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had previously said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though the bureau’s jobs report has been suspended, the bureau still released its inflation report for September that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
