Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Alliance Formed Between TV Host and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.

The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a secure and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
