An underground economy for unapproved slimming drugs is being driven by social media fitness personalities and vendors on communication apps, according to recent findings.
Experimental Treatment Gaining Popularity Online
The experimental drug, which remains in clinical trials, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to contact these accounts privately for source information, while also receiving promotional offers.
Active Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with thousands of participants share comparison images, administration instructions and claims of next-day British shipping. Sellers market the drug there before directing customers to other platforms for purchases.
Learning About The Experimental Drug
Retatrutide is an experimental injection created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The treatment targets three intestinal hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, GIP and glucagon. Early trials indicate it could help patients lose up to a quarter of their total weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the drug is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Voice Concerns
However, physicians and pharmacists have warned that the distribution of what is still an unapproved medication in the UK is worrisome and could lead to individuals administering products of unknown origin.
Several experts said the demand for the experimental drug could be linked to the rising price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Enforcement
Marketing retatrutide on TikTok or Telegram is prohibited in the United Kingdom, as it is an unlicensed drug that must not be marketed or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some influencers try to circumvent the rules by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. Retatrutide is not a restricted substance, but promotion and supply can still breach pharmaceutical, marketing, and consumer laws, potentially leading to fines, prosecution or imprisonment.
Platform Reaction and Content Elimination
According to the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic material and prohibited associated hashtags and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to keeping the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Online Marketplace Operations
Research also discovered groups with up to 9,000 members selling retatrutide using Telegram's built-in search feature, which functions like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of slimming results, positive reviews and step-by-step guides for preparing or administering at home.
After moments of entering one community, a seller posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of transactions occur. The seller provided an guidebook and guaranteed shipping within two days. When asked whether the product was genuine, one seller responded: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a photo of a supposed testing documentation. Not one asked about body mass, medical conditions or previous experience.
Product Information and Pricing
Within these communities, posts show black plastic packages with postal service stickers, stating to include fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with sterile water, or ready-to-use injectors usually sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should be used, sellers give conflicting answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Service Moderation and Safety Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it regularly monitored dangerous material on its service including content that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Healthcare Professional Warnings
“People are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the research behind retatrutide is valid, these online versions may not include what they claim,” stated Jason Murphy, the director of pharmaceutical services at Chemist4U.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in interest to recent price rises for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs increasing, individuals are using online platforms. But fake injections are extremely risky. You can’t be certain what’s inside or whether the environment they were produced in was clean,” she explained.
Her staff has already encountered individuals injured by personal administration from unverified suppliers. “We understand the frustration, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These materials could be impure or incorrectly dosed.”
Manufacturer Position
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company stated the substance was in phase 3 research studies and had not been evaluated or authorized by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Consequently at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, adding that any product “misleadingly claiming itself as a company experimental substance not yet approved … may subject patients to potentially significant health risks”.
