The buzz around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The question has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.
Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, prepare for a surprise. The studio clarified that a third Original Sin game to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team could be designing a more action-oriented experience rather than another tactical title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
A Pillar of Modern RPGs
The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—qualities that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom given to the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with unique possibilities only possible with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, enabling players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, often in surprising fashion.
- You might progress the story because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
