Each time a significant honors show nears, one notices a clamor to include of new categories to honor underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing above others. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
- Just some puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title competes with well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
