Wolff Set to Sell Shareholding Valuing Mercedes F1 at £4.6 Billion

Toto Wolff is in advanced talks to sell part of his ownership stake in the Mercedes Formula 1 team.

This transaction values the Mercedes team at £4.6 billion – a record for an F1 team – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in an adjustment to ownership structure last September.

The Austrian executive, who holds one-third of the Mercedes F1 operation, would sell a stake approximately five percent.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team boss and CEO should the deal proceed.

Shareholder Structure

Remaining partners in the team are Mercedes-Benz and chemicals giant Ineos, who both hold one-third of the company.

An official representative said: "We are providing no comment on the matter. The management structure of Mercedes F1 will remain unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to the ongoing success of Mercedes-Benz in Formula One."

Financial Growth

This arrangement would represent a substantial rise in value of Mercedes F1 after Ineos bought its share for £208 million in 2022.

This surge reflects the expansion in valuations of Formula 1 outfits in the past few years as a consequence of the increasing appeal of the sport around the world.

This was also seen in the success of the Formula 1 film starring Hollywood star Brad Pitt, which was released in summer 2023 and has grossed over $630m (£458m) at the box office.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Current Performance

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer British driver George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

Mercedes secured a record eight straight team titles and seven driver championships, six won by Lewis Hamilton and one for Nico Rosberg, from 2014 to 2021.
